Open access lets industrial and commercial consumers buy electricity directly from a solar generator instead of the utility, at tariffs lower than prevailing grid rates.
The consumer pays for the electricity supplied under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
How open access works
- Long-term open access permission is obtained from the state utility or distribution company serving the consumer's premises.
- A long-term PPA is signed between the consumer and the solar power generator.
- The project is financed and constructed. Under the captive model, the consumer invests and holds part of the equity.
- Power is generated and sold to the consumer through the open access route at a pre-determined tariff.
